Currents is a gallery space dedicated to recognizing the work of emerging and evolving California artists. Featuring a different artist every two months, Currents presents a range of media, styles, and genres. 

Artist Statement

As our society becomes depersonalized and we are bombarded with media, I mine newspapers, art history, music, and literature to find themes that resonate personally and produce visual stories. Masks, figures, architectural details, and graffiti are interwoven with contemporary issues. Layers of handwriting are incorporated into the paintings as background or bones on which the paint layers are built. The process of "making," searching for the content, developing a concept, applying collage materials, personal marks and paint layers, manipulating and changing the surface (much like civilizations and societies that grow over time) is what keeps me excited about my art.

About the Artist

Judith Marshall, born in 1943, is a versatile artist renowned for her mixed media paintings and books, which intricately blend personal symbols, narrative elements, collage techniques, and water-based mediums. A graduate of California State University Long Beach with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree, Marshall has exhibited her work extensively across various galleries and institutions. Notable highlights include solo and group shows at prestigious venues like the McLoughlin Gallery in San Francisco, CA. Her recent solo exhibition, Compilations, held at the Sammamish City Hall in Sammamish, WA, in October 2022, further underscores her enduring commitment to creating captivating visual narratives that resonate with audiences far and wide.
