About the 2027 Monterey Biennial 

Aligned with our mission to inspire creativity, connect communities, and celebrate the stories of California art, MMA is delighted to announce the return of the Monterey Biennial. This exhibition showcases contemporary art by highlighting the diverse and dynamic voices of Central California artists. Following the success of the 2025 Biennial—which received more than 800 submissions and featured 122 contemporary artists from across the region—MMA continues its commitment to amplifying contemporary talent and the diverse creative perspectives of our region.

Become a Biennial Artist

Submit your work to the 2027 Monterey Biennial! Open to artists ages 18 and older living in Fresno, Kern, Kings, Monterey, San Benito, Santa Cruz, and San Luis Obispo counties, the Museum seeks compelling and innovative work from both emerging and established artists. Artists may submit ceramics, drawings, installations, paintings, prints, photography, mixed media, new media, sculptures, textiles, and time-based work for consideration. Designed to be both accessible and equitable for all artists, the Museum has chosen to waive all submission fees.

• Notification of Acceptance: February 10, 2027
• Exhibition Dates: June 24 – September 26, 2027

Call for Curator

This year, MMA is seeking a contemporary, California-based curator to help develop the 2027 Monterey Biennial. Working closely with Museum staff, the Curator will shape the exhibition's vision and voice, guide artwork selection and layout, and contribute to installation and interpretive materials. To learn more about qualifications and how to apply, visit the Monterey Biennial Call for Curator.
