Upcoming Exhibitions
Iluminado
As the year draws to a close and we celebrate the grand finale of our exhibition season, the Monterey Museum of Art (MMA) proudly presents Iluminado—an immersive installation that transforms the gallery into a space of light, reflection, and connection. With FREE admission throughout December, MMA is set to launch a series of programs for adults, students, and families. Whether it's Free Family Fun Day, a Creative Grounds workshop, or MMA's Winter Art Market, December promises to be a vibrant month at the Museum!
Iluminado marks a new chapter for MMA and signifies a transformative view of art and its role in space and community. Join us in this seasonal celebration of unity, creativity, and wonder.
Become a Part of a Living Art Installation
Through an interactive sculpture, paintings, and interpretive text, Rooms of Possibility is an immersive art installation created by artist-in-residence Anne Ylvisaker for MMA's fourth annual Iluminado. Visitors are invited to communicate with the artist through a living, ever-evolving body of work and to create their own rooms of possibility—exploring the role of dreams and collective memory in the creative process. Ylvisaker imagines the space as always in a process of becoming, carrying the light of creativity with each interaction into an illuminated artistic conversation.
Part of MMA's Art Connecting Community initiative, Iluminado invites visitors to explore, create, and contribute to a collective work of art. Through hands-on artmaking and shared storytelling, this evolving installation celebrates the transformative power of light, creativity, and community.
Meet the Artist
Anne Ylvisaker is a Monterey, California artist and author whose art and writing are complementary practices embedded in storytelling. Ylvisaker's visual art and literary works explore collective memory, family history, community, and place. Her recent site-specific installation, Lánsdottir, examined her matriarchal family heritage through an imagined landscape and inspired both an animated short film and a documentary about friendship and art. Her forthcoming picture book HOW TO WONDER (Viking, 2027) explores the art of doing nothing.
For MMA, Rooms of Possibility presents Ylvisaker's public project to activate a community's dreams and memories into objects reflecting personal narrative.
