Bay of Life: From Wind to Whales harmoniously blends various aspects of nature to offer a comprehensive portrayal of the Monterey Bay region. Frans Lanting's captivating photographs of both land and sea guide viewers on a journey of unity and restoration. Monterey Bay, inhabited by large creatures both on land and in the ocean, has undergone a remarkable transformation. Once ravaged by resource exploitation, the region's forests and marine life faced depletion. However, the exhibition illuminates a triumphant story of ecological rejuvenation, demonstrating that damaged ecosystems can be revitalized through collective care and action. Bay of Life serves as a testament to the efficacy of restoration efforts and serves as an inspiring model for addressing contemporary challenges, such as resource stewardship, habitat preservation, and the impacts of climate change. A sister exhibition by the same name will be on view at California State University Monterey Bay (CSUMB), showcasing more of Lanting's work from March 15 to August 2024.

About the Artist

Frans Lanting's influential images of nature appear in books, magazines, and exhibitions around the world. Lanting's books include Into Africa, LIFE, Jungles, Eye to Eye, and Okavango. Lanting is an ambassador for the World Wildlife Fund and has received numerous awards for his work, including the prestigious Wildlife Photographer of the Year's first Lifetime Achievement Award. Moreover, His Royal Highness Prince Bernhard inducted Lanting as a Knight in the Royal Order of the Golden Ark, the Netherlands' highest conservation honor.
