In the Still of the Night: Nocturnes presents a diverse selection of works from the permanent collection depicting the dramatic and tranquil aspects of nightfall. Capturing the lost enchantment of night skies from before the age of electric light, In the Still of the Night explores the nocturnes of artists such as Charles Rollo Peters, Will Sparks, and Jules Tavernier who poetically captured the ethereal beauty of illuminated late nineteenth century nights. The exhibition—featuring painters, printmakers, and photographers—unveils the mystery and serenity of nocturnes while showcasing how artificial light has shaped the perspectives of contemporary artists today such as Barry Masteller and Roland Petersen.
