Monterey Museum of Art Completes the Sale of Perry Lane Property
Museum also announces major support of its long-term vision at the Pacific Street location
MONTEREY, CA (JUNE 10, 2025)--Monterey Museum of Art (MMA) today announces an important milestone in its capital development plans, having completed the sale of the parcel of land located at 590 Perry Lane. The Museum originally acquired the property in 2020 for consideration as a site for redevelopment. Proceeds from the sale of Perry Lane ensure timely repayment of the Museum's Community Impact Loan granted in 2023 by the Community Foundation of Monterey County to facilitate the purchase the historic Miller Adobe, adjacent to the Museum on Pacific Street.
The Board's unanimous decision to sell 590 Perry Lane and purchase the Miller Adobe was based on comprehensive feasibility studies by Lord Cultural Resources and HMC Architects conducted between 2021–2023. The study recommended concentrating future Museum operations on Pacific Street in the heart of the historic district.
In 2024-2025 Museum began a pre-design process for a future campus on Pacific Street in collaboration with Jensen Architects of San Francisco and in close cooperation with the City of Monterey, as well as community members and strategic partners.
Corey Madden, MMA Executive Director, notes, "With the community's ongoing support, Monterey Museum of Art will become a vital hub in the historic district for art and our community. We can boost tourism and spur sustainable economic development. It's thrilling to see our vision gaining support and momentum."
Since 2020, nearly $4 million dollars for this initial phase of capital development has been generously donated or pledged by leadership donors including the Nancy Eccles and Homer M. Hayward Foundation, the KHR McNeely Family Foundation, and Judith and Frank Marshall.
MMA Board of Trustees President Tom Donnelly states, "As a result of careful planning and financial management, the Museum is now poised to move forward into the next stage of capital development around our Pacific Street campus."
