Artist Statement
My work explores the layers of reciprocal forces present in each moment. Subtle and contemplative, these collections engage the senses, encouraging a deeper appreciation for the beauty, fragility, and resiliency of life. By transforming ancestral legacies, I address a fundamental human need for belonging, situating myself as part of a larger, dynamic, living landscape. These landscape portraits function as self-portraits, though the human figure is absent, and instead reveal how our presence shapes and is shaped by the natural world. The work seeks to illuminate our transformative power—both as destructive actors and as potential stewards within greater ecological systems.
The cyanotype images begin as wash paintings, where water evaporates to leave behind reticulate textures formed by the interplay of oil, water, air, brushwork, and substrate. Each wash painting is then translated into a negative, placed over light-sensitive paper, and exposed to sunlight. When rinsed in water, the image develops into a cyanotype print, revealing the alchemy of light and material transformation. This process merges the handmade with the technological, weaving together design, drawing, painting, and photography into luminous blue works. In their making, artist and medium engage in a reciprocal dance—an exchange yielding artworks that are both earthly and mystical.
About the Artist
Vincent James Waring is an artist and craftsman based along the Central Coast of California. He is interested in the ecology of wild and intentional spaces, which he often explores through imagery reflecting parts of the whole. His practice spans printmaking, painting, and drawing, often blending traditional and experimental techniques. Waring's work has been exhibited nationally and internationally, including the Esalen Institute, Big Sur; the Hall of Awa Handmade Paper Museum, Tokushima, Japan; and the Chennai Photo Biennale Foundation, India. He is an Irwin Scholar, and a collaborative partner in Reciprocal Field, a small artist-run project that shares stories of personal and collective origins, spirit, and reciprocity based artistic projects based in Santa Cruz, California. Alongside his studio work, Waring is immersed in textiles, wood, and plants, and is an Exhibit Prototyping Engineer with the Monterey Bay Aquarium.
