See the Forest for the Trees

2013.018Thursday, July 4 – Sunday, August 18, 2019

The Monterey Peninsula is home to great natural beauty and unique flora like the Monterey Cypress and Monterey Pine. They have been the subject and inspiration for artists and visitors to the area for over a century, and are well-represented in the Museum’s collection by such iconic images as Francis McComas’s Cypress, Monterey, and William Ritchshel’s Centurions of the Sea. But there are other aspects of the Museum’s collection of California Art that represent trees in different styles, guises and contexts, in various media, as both subjects and metaphors, and invite us to view them with fresh eyes. This exhibition will bring together a mixture of works not ordinarily seen together, including Andrew Schoultz’s Meditations under Stress (10 Shamans, Horizon Looming), Eyvind Earle’s California Hills, Emile Norman’s Tree of Life, Ferdinand Burgdorff’s Blue Smoke Tree, Salton Sea Area, and Cole Weston’s Bristle Cone Pines, among others.

Andrew Schoultz, “Meditations under Stress (10 Shamans, Horizon Looming)”, 2013, acrylic, gold leaf and collage on canvas over panel, 72 x 48 in. (182.88 x 121.92 cm). MMA Acquisition Fund Purchase with funds provided by Barbara and William Hyland, 2013.018.
