MONTEREY, CA The Monterey Museum of Art looks forward to presenting an exhibition inspired by the rich cultural history of the Central California region. Monterey Collects: Masterworks from Monterey County Collections will showcase prominent works from distinguished private collections and significant public holdings. The Exhibition will include important paintings by early California artists such as Armin Hansen, Percy Gray and Jeanette Maxfield Lewis as well representatives of the Bay Area art abstract and figurative schools such as Walter Snelgrove, Joan Brown and Bernice Bing.
Monterey Collects will also feature works by nationally-acclaimed modern and contemporary artists including Andy Warhol, Jim Dine and Elizabeth Murray. Photography will be represented by a significant selection of images spanning the history of the medium, including works by Edward Curtis, Henri-Cartier Bresson, Youssef Karsh and Martha Casanave. Monterey Collects will also highlight contemporary and ancient Asian ceramics. The exhibition will be on view at both Museum locations and will offer a singular opportunity to discover the vibrant artistic heritage and collecting enthusiasm of the Monterey region.
Monterey Collects: Masterworks from Monterey County Collections is on view at the Monterey Museum of Art, Pacific Street and La Mirada, from June 9 until September 27, 2006.
