MONTEREY, CA. The Monterey Museum of Art has “A Farewell to Summer” celebration and wine tasting planned for this Third Thursday, October 19 from 5-7 pm. Opening this evening will be Through the Lens: Portraiture and Photography, with a special focus on Yousuf Karsh’s portraits of celebrated individuals.
Third Thursday offers free admission and a lively atmosphere where arts patrons, young professionals, students, and out-of-town visitors enjoy light hors d’oeuvres and refreshments. October’s Third Thursday is sponsored by Wald, Ruhnke & Dost, Architects LLP with a wine tasting by Blackstone Winery, and extraordinary catering by Moveable Feast.
Opening this night and continuing until February 11, 2007, Through the Lens: Portraiture and Photography offers a selection of portraits by Robert Mapplethorpe, Edward Weston, Johan Hagemeyer, Ansel Adams, William Heick and Alma Lavenson, among others, and focusing on Yousuf Karsh, a master of photographic portraiture. The exhibition will include Karsh’s portraits of cultural luminaries such as Ernest Hemingway, Winston Churchill and Albert Schweitzer and artists such as Joan Miro and Marc Chagall.

The Monterey Museum of Art was established in 1959 as a chapter of the American Federation of the Arts. The Museum collects, preserves and interprets American art, in particular the work of artists active on the Monterey Peninsula and the West Coast, and Asian art. The permanent collection of 15,000 paintings, photographs, works on paper includes significant holdings of California paintings by artists such as Armin Hansen, William F. Ritschel, Gottardo Piazzoni, and world-renowned photographers including Edward Weston and Ansel Adams.
