MontereyNOW: Kevin Miller
JULY 16-NOVEMBER 9, 2009
OPENS THURSDAY, JULY 16 DURING ART AFTER HOURS
AT THE MONTEREY MUSEUM OF ART PACIFIC STREET

[MONTEREY, CA] On Thursday, July 16, the Monterey Museum of Art will host the opening of MontereyNOW: Kevin Miller. MontereyNOW is a bi-annual series whose goal is to identify and present local artists who have made a significant regional and national contribution to the visual arts. Each presentation is a solo exhibition and an inaugural display of new work chosen by the artist.

Kevin Miller creates his images from a single sheet of paper by cutting them out with an exacto knife. He sparingly layers more paper to form backgrounds or provide contrast. At times humorous, at others sinister, Miller’s imaginative and often complex cut-paper vignettes offer glimpses of apparently ordinary life, whose mysterious stillness is full of possibilities. The MontereyNOW series is sponsored by Barbara and William Hyland.

The opening will take place during Art After Hours, held each third Thursday from 5-7 pm at MMA Pacific Street, 559 Pacific Street in Monterey. Admission is free and visitors enjoy an evening of art, conversation, wine and hors d’oeuvres. The July Art After Hours is sponsored by Joullian, the official Art After Hours winery and catered by Baum & Blume and the Carriage House.

Kevin Miller’s interest in art was sparked by the muckraking “zines” and protest posters he created as a student at California State University, Monterey Bay. These led to his experimentation with woodcut and linocut printmaking techniques. His first paper cut was created as a card for a wedding gift and inspired an investigation of the historic paper cutting traditions of Mexico and China. His own work is informed by and builds on these traditions, but Miller elaborates on them with a variety of layered effects, sanded plexiglas, paints and fabric.

About The Monterey Museum of Art

Mission: The Monterey Museum of Art collects, preserves, and interprets the art of California from the nineteenth century to the present day, within a national and international context. In this way, we expand the appreciation of our evolving artistic legacy and inspire a passion for the visual arts.

Ritschel, Edward Weston and Ansel Adams. The Monterey Museum of Art has two locations: 559 Pacific Street (closed through April 15 for the 50th Anniversary exhibition installation) and 720 Via Mirada, Monterey, CA, 93940. The Museum is open Wednesday through Saturday, 11 am to 5 pm and Sunday 1 to 4 pm. Admission: $5.00 general, $2.50 students and military with ID.  MMA members and children under 12 are free.
