MONTEREY MUSEUM OF ART DIRECTOR TO STEP DOWN
Strategic Changes Ahead for the Monterey Museum of Art

MONTEREY, CA- After seven years at the Monterey Museum of Art (MMA), Executive Director E. Michael Whittington is leaving the Museum. "Michael has brought an impressive record of artistic achievement to the Museum and we are grateful for his dedication, passion, and creativity. His commitment to community engagement has been commendable and will have a lasting impact in our region," praised Melissa Burnett, President of the MMA Board of Trustees. The Board will begin a search immediately for his replacement.

"Among the rewarding aspects of my career at the Monterey Museum of Art were creating an outstanding exhibition program, developing new audiences, securing significant foundation, individual and corporate support, and working with a talented and engaged Board and staff. It has been an honor and privilege to serve as the Museum's Executive Director," said Whittington.

An accomplished pianist, author, and expert in ancient and twentieth century American art as well as pre-Columbian and African art, Whittington came to MMA from the Mint Museum in Charlotte, NC.

The Monterey Museum of Art is devoted to the visual arts of California and collects and presents exhibitions on photography, contemporary art, works on paper and Asian art. The Museum was established in 1959 as a chapter of the American Federation of the Arts and is accredited by the American Association of Museums. Over twenty permanent collection and traveling exhibitions are presented annually in two Monterey locations: 559 Pacific Street and 720 Via Mirada.
