Overview: In the 1980s, renowned photographer Michael Kenna came to the Monterey Peninsula to photograph Elkhorn Slough and the surrounding environment. The resulting images reveal the unlikely conjunction of marshlands and the neighboring Moss Landing power plant, achieved with Kenna’s usual consummate grace.

This exhibition is presented in collaboration with the Elkhorn Slough Foundation.

Overview: The Museum’s permanent collection is a treasure trove of riches. Ranging across media and spanning more than a century, the presentation will include Early California paintings by Xavier Martinez, woodblocks by Rufino Tamayo and a series of lithographs by David Alfaro Siqueiros—one of the great Mexican Muralists.

Overview: Photographer Bryant Austin, founder of Marine Mammal Conservation Through the Arts, has spent the last several years in Tonga, working with Humpback Whales. This exhibition showcases the monumental images that capture the magnificence of these animals and their poignant underwater interactions with the photographer. In addition to the large-scale photographic images, the exhibition also incorporates moving images and a sound installation. Moving and profound, this rare exhibition combines art, science, and conservation education.

Overview: This exhibition examines the parallel lives and artistic accomplishments of the Armin Hansen and William F. Ritschel, two preeminent artists who defined California landscape painting. In the 1920s and 1930s, at the height of their fame and careers, Hansen and Ritschel both lived on the Monterey Peninsula and from here, they exerted a profound impact on the development of Early California art and the Monterey school in particular. In this exhibition, the Monterey Museum of Art will reconsider the contribution of these two contemporaries in rich visual relationships and a newly reinterpreted historical and biographical context.

Overview: The permanent collection of the Monterey Museum of Art holds a wide range of artwork that pays homage to the Monterey cypress. As a true icon of the central California coast, its unmistakable form has lured and inspired countless artists. The exhibition will include photography by Edward Weston and Leopold Hugo, and paintings by William Ritschel, Mary deNeale Morgan and Charles Dickman.

MontereyNOW: Peter K. Brooks

Overview: The next installment of the MontereyNOW series will feature the bright, gestural abstract paintings of Peter K. Brooks. Influenced by great Abstract Expressionists, as well as West coast abstract artists, Brooks offers a painterly reinterpretation of this landmark mid-century style, with a contemporary edge.

MontereyNOW is a series devoted to contemporary artists of Monterey County. Each exhibition is a solo exhibition and an inaugural display of new works by the chosen artist.

The MontereyNOW series is sponsored by Barbara and William Hyland.

Overview: The decade of the 1990s was defined by shifting and competing artistic trends. While some painters, inspired by other media such as photography, pursued a realistic, figurative approach, others embraced and furthered a more abstract style. Focusing on works by California painters, the exhibition includes works by artists such as Amy Kaufman, Rick Arnitz and Lordan Bunch.
