The artists represented in Monterey Places, our current exhibition of Monterey County landscapes from the permanent collection, sketched and painted both in their studios and outdoors to capture the natural splendor and built environment of our region. Grab a pencil and let cartoonist Bridgett Spicer show you how to thoughtfully design and craft your own sketchbook with ink and watercolor. She’ll share her own whimsical style and easy-to-learn techniques and show you how to develop your sketching and recording skills in three separate workshops. Space is limited to 20 participants per class. All levels welcome. Ages 16 and up.

Journalizing Life: You will learn how to use your sketchbook to capture moments, events, thoughts, and record the life around you using ink and watercolor (this is not a watercolor class… basic color blurping will be used, so no fears). You will also learn fun elements like creative hand lettering and simple collage.

Visual Info-Doodling: Here you will be taught the ways of visually recording information and exploring ideas using the visual language of Info-Sketching. This skill allows you to engage your whole mind while capturing information and harnessing the ideas floating around in your head.

Urban-Sketching: In this workshop, you will learn how to spy on people in coffee shops, draw them, their food and their surroundings. You will learn to draw outdoor spaces and public places, as well as engage in gesture drawing and watercoloring.

Instructor: Bridgett Spicer

Educated in fine art from UC Santa Cruz and Palomar College, Bridgett, a twenty-year Monterey Bay resident, has freelanced from Santa Cruz to Pacific Grove. For the past ten years, she has focused on cartooning, having drawn the popular local comic strip, Squid Row since 2007. Bridgett teaches cartooning in elementary schools and Scout troops around the Monterey Bay and enjoys sketchbooking her frequent travels abroad.
