Summer Art Camps for Kids

RTPL0358The Monterey Museum of Art offers Summer Camps for children ages five through sixteen. Bring a healthy snack, a bottle of water, wear old clothes or bring an apron, and let’s get creative at camp! Children remain on-site at our Pacific Street or La Mirada location the duration of the camp.                                        

Join MMA at the $125 Contributor Membership level to receive a discounted price per class and MMA member benefits for one year.

Age Policy: If a student turns the appropriate age by the end of August, they can join the camp. For example, a 4 year old student turning 5 at the end of August can join a camp for 5 to 6 year old students.

Five-Day Art Camps

Animal Mania
June 3 – June 7, 2019
9:00 am to 12:00 noon
Ages 5-8
La Mirada Cultural Center

Send your little explorers to the Museum to discover animals from all around the world! We’ll explore the animal kingdom with creative and imaginative art-making. Learn how to make puppets, design your own binoculars for animal viewing, draw, paint, and so much more. Each camper will go home with their own animal art kingdom!

Photo Fun in the Sun
June 17 – June 21, 2019
9:00 am to 12:00 noon
Ages 5-8

In this fun, exploratory, and science-based camp, students will learn some of the many exciting ways to make a photographic print. We’ll experiment with vegetable juice, sun prints, transfers, and so much more! Students will create their own photography portfolio book to take home at the end of the week.

Virtual Studio
June 17 – June 21, 2019
1:00 pm to 4:00 pm
Ages 11-14

Learn to sketch, draw, and paint on your iPad or tablet! In this 5-day course, we will learn basic iPad design skills to create games, super-characters, or even your own fashion designs.

Blow your mind with organic art using natural materials! Explore the gardens of La Mirada and create seed mosaics, plantable paper, weave your own basket, and so much more!

Ink-redible Art!
July 22 – July 26, 2019
1:00 pm to 4:00 pm
Ages 11-14

Printmaking is an art form that allows artists to express their vision in many different ways. We will learn about a variety of printmaking techniques. We will be learning how to design and create fine art prints using methods such as linoleum block printmaking, collagraphs, monotypes, marbling and more.

Five-Day LEGO® Camps

Robotics using LEGO® WeDo®
June 10 – June 14, 2019
9:00 am to 12:00 noon
Ages 6 to 8

Build and program robots in this introductory Robotics class using the LEGO® WeDo® system. Learn basic programming skills, simple engineering concepts, and the names of robot components. Work in small groups to complete several projects using tilt and motion sensors. This is a great way to prepare young Robotics enthusiasts for our more advanced Robotics programs.

Cost $215 members, $235 non-members.

Robotics using LEGO® EV3
June 10 – June 14, 2019
1:00 pm to 4:00 pm
Ages 9 to 12

Build and program robots using the new LEGO® Mindstorms EV3 system! Learn about mechanical and software design, loops, conditional statements, problem solving, and teamwork skills. Work in small groups, program and build your robot, and rise to the challenge. Control the robot to avoid obstacles, pick up and carry objects, and play sounds. Projects are structured so that students work in an open-ended, investigative environment while having fun.

Cost $215 members, $235 non-members.

Harry Potter Magical Engineering with LEGO® Materials
June 24 – June 28, 2019
9:00 am to 12:00 noon
Ages 5 to 7

Explore the magic of Harry Potter using LEGO®! Find Platform 9 ¾, build Hogwarts Express Train, work cooperatively to construct the mysterious Hogwarts Castle, and soar on the wings of a Norwegian Ridgeback Dragon. Travel to a world of wizardry and hone your magical skills while learning about Muggle (STEM) concepts.

Harry Potter Master Engineering with LEGO® Materials
June 24 – June 28, 2019

Ages 7 to 11

Master the magic of Harry Potter using LEGO®! Build Diagon Alley in preparation for your trip to Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Hop on your Broomstick and play Quidditch, duel the evil Lord Voldemort, and hone your magical skills while learning about advanced Muggle (STEM) concepts.

Lift-Off with LEGO® Materials
July 8 – July 12, 2019

Ages 5 to 7

Do you wish you could fly? Do you dream of breaking the sound barrier, or landing on Mars? Then this camp is for you! Build LEGO models of every kind of flying machine, from wings that flap like a bird’s, to P-51 Mustangs, Stealth Bombers, and NASA rockets. Then discover how real-world aircraft and spacecraft actually fly!

Bash’em Bots with LEGO® Materials
July 8 – July 12, 2019

Ages 7 to 11

Have you ever wanted to learn how to make a massive motorized LEGO® machine? Our Play Well Engineering instructors guide students in this advanced Play-Well engineering camp, as they re-engineer standard LEGO® vehicles into mechanized machines that can traverse challenging obstacles, battle against fellow bots, and take on Play-Well Instructors’ colossal creations.

Cost $180 members, $200 non-members.

Refund Policy: Refunds can be given if Monterey Museum of Art is notified at least 72 hours before the event begins. A 25% service charge will be assessed to each event cancellation. No refunds will be given for cancellations less than 72 hours before the event begins. Full refunds will be given if event is cancelled by MMA. Camps may be canceled if there is low enrollment. You will be contacted within one week of the camp if this is the case.

Transfers can be made for classes: MMA will transfer your payment from one class to another class (of the same price) if the transfer request is received at least 72 hours before the class begins. For more information contact: education@montereyart.org
