Summer Art Camps for Kids

The Monterey Museum of Art offers Summer Camps
for children ages fivSummer campe through sixteen. Bring a healthy snack, a bottle of water, wear old clothes or bring an apron, and let’s get creative at camp! All camps are at our Pacific Street location, unless otherwise noted. Children remain on-site at our Pacific Street or La Mirada locations the duration of the camp.                                        

Join MMA at the $125 Contributor Membership level to receive a discounted price per class and MMA member benefits for one year.

Age Policy: If a student turns the appropriate age by the end of August, they can join the camp. For example, a 4 year old student turning 5 at the end of August can join a camp for 5 to 6 year old students.

 

Five-Day LEGO Campslego

June 5 – June 9, 2017
9:00 am to 12:00 noon
Intro to STEM with Lego®
Ages 5 to 7
Tap into your imagination with tens of thousands of LEGO®! Build engineer-designed projects such as Boats, Snowmobiles, Catapults, and Merry-Go-Rounds. Then use special pieces to create your own unique design! New and returning students can explore the endless creative possibilities of the LEGO® building system with the guidance of an experienced Play-Well instructor. There is no prerequisite for this course.

Cost $180 members, $200 non-members.

STEM with Lego®
Ages: 7 to 11
Power on your engineering skills with Play-Well TEKnologies and tens of thousands of LEGO®! Apply real-world concepts in physics, engineering, and architecture through engineer-designed projects such as Catapults, Pneumatic Cranes, Arch Bridges, and Battletracks! Design and build as never before, and explore your craziest ideas in a supportive environment. An experienced instructor will challenge new and returning students to engineer at the next level.

Batman’s Gotham Gadgets with Lego®
Ages: 5 to 7
Take on Gotham’s villains by designing and building Batman’s favorite crime-fighting machines! Build the Bat Tumbler, craft a Batwing, and design your very own Batcave, all out of LEGO. Then use your projects to help save the city. Be the super-hero or super-heroine Gotham needs while learning how the world works through STEM concepts!

Batman’s Master Mechanics with Lego®
Ages: 7 to 11
Defeat Gotham’s villains by designing and building Batman’s most advanced crime-fighting machines! Infiltrate Arkham Asylum, build a Bat Cycle, and fly your Batcopter. Then use your projects to thwart the Joker’s plans to take over the city. Be the super-hero or super-heroine Gotham needs while engineering solutions through the use of STEM concepts!

Jedi Minecraft Adventure Game using Lego®
Ages: 5 to 7
Mine, craft, and build the Star Wars universe using LEGO! Roll the dice to gather Jedi resources. Then build a Pod Racer, craft a Droid, or create the Treehouse Village of Endor! This novice Play-Well LEGO game is inspired by the Minecraft tablet game and the Star Wars fantasy setting.

Robotics using Lego® WeDo
Ages: 6 to 8
Build and program robots in this introductory Robotics class using the LEGO WeDo system. Learn basic programming skills, simple engineering concepts, and the names of robot components.  Work in small groups to complete several projects using tilt and motion sensors.  This is a great way to prepare young Robotics enthusiasts for our more advanced Robotics programs.

Robotics using Lego® EV3
Ages: 8 to 12
Build and program robots using the new LEGO Mindstorms EV3 system! Learn about mechanical and software design, problem solving, and teamwork skills. Work in small groups, program and build your robot, and rise to the challenge. Control the robot to avoid obstacles, pick up and carry objects, and play sounds. Projects are structured so that students work in an open-ended, investigative environment while having fun.

Five–Day Art Camps

Where the Wild Things Are
Ages 5-8
Send your little monsters to Monster Camp! The only art camp where you can search for Big Foot and learn how to care for your pet dragon, all while learning about art! Through the use of various materials, we will explore the world of monsters and create our very own creatures!  Instructor: Museum Learning Coordinator, Roxanne O’Weger.

Ages 8-12
We will explore the different styles of art throughout history by making our own art! Inspired by famous artworks and artists, students will learn an exciting variety of art-making of art materials and techniques. Instructor: Museum Learning Coordinator, Roxanne O’Weger.

Drawing From the Unconscious
Teen Camp
Ages 12-16
Where do creative ideas come from? This art camp for teens will focus on developing and strengthening the creative unconscious. Learn different techniques to tap into the mind of an artist in a fun, creative atmosphere. The camp will also cover the Elements of Art including form, composition, value, color, and their usefulness when creating art.  Instructor: Museum Educator, Vincent Garcia.

E[ART]H Camp at La Mirada
Ages 5-8
Have fun in the sun in our La Mirada gardens! E[art]h Camp will explore the plants and animals of the Monterey Bay. Kids will learn about the elements of art while making fun projects that help us explore our environment.Instructor: Museum Educator, Lauren Docter.

Around the World
Ages 8-12
Join MMA as we take a trip around the world in 5 days! During our “Around the World” summer camp, we will take you to a new place each day and explore new cultures through arts and crafts, music, language and stories! The places we will explore include Mexico, China, Rwanda, Afghanistan and even Native American cultures! Don’t miss this opportunity to hear the story of the Mexican flag, create Rwanda Imigongo inspired paintings, learn how to say “hello” in Chinese, construct beautiful Native American dreamcatchers, explore what daily life is like for an Afghani child and more! So grab your passport and join us for a trip around the world!  Instructor:  Museum Educator, Megan Garland.

Refund Policy: Refunds can be given if Monterey Museum of Art is notified at least 72 hours before the event begins. A 25% service charge will be assessed to each event cancellation. No refunds will be given for cancellations less than 72 hours before the event begins. Full refunds will be given if event is cancelled by MMA. Camps may be canceled if there is low enrollment. You will be contacted within one week of the camp if this is the case.

Transfers can be made for classes: MMA will transfer your payment from one class to another class (of the same price) if the transfer request is received at least 72 hours before the class begins.
