MAKING WAVES: Virtual Mondays at the Museum

July 24, 2020 | Allyson Hitte | Press Room/Blog

This week on MAKING WAVES, we’re taking a closer look at our popular Member’s only program, Virtual Mondays at the Museum.  Join us on the second Monday of the month at 4 pm as we talk with artists, curators, museum professionals, art historians and more in an open and casual conversation about art and museums.

On March 16, we joined most cultural institutions across the world and temporarily closed our doors to the public. Staff were sent home to work remotely, school tours were cancelled, and a sense of uncertainty began to settle in. Our thoughts quickly went to our members. Though we could no longer physically be together, we knew we needed to remain united as a community. We sought out new ways to connect virtually, and created our new monthly members-only program, Virtual Mondays at the Museum. On the first Monday of the month, a member of our community will host Virtual Mondays at the Museum via Zoom and have an open dialogue with our members about art. Hosts vary from MMA Staff and Docents to contributing artists and art historians. Our goal is to provide our members an inside look at what we’re doing and to stay connected as an art community.

On our next Virtual Mondays at the Museum (Monday, July 27), we will be chatting with the MMA Manager of Education and Public Engagement, Chris Cohoon, and our Education Coordinator, Roxanne O’Weger. Chris and Roxanne will be speaking about the Museum’s popular School Visit program. Through generous grants and individual donations, the Museum served over 3,000 students last year completely free of charge and was set to serve over 4,000 students from around the county when COVID-19 shut down schools as well as the Museum.  Since then, MMA’s education program has had to pivot this program to a virtual platform in anticipation of the upcoming school year.  On Monday, Chris and Roxanne will walk participants through the four curricula offered to schools and share plans for our virtual tour transition.

Living through a pandemic can often prove isolating.  Our members join us to support our mission, but also to be a part of a community.  That community is passionate, vibrant, creative, and should be celebrated.  If you’re not already, consider joining as a member of the Monterey Museum of Art and join us once a month for Virtual Mondays at the Museum.
