MAKING WAVES: Community Partner Spotlight, Undocufund Monterey Bay

August 7, 2020 | Allyson Hitte | Press Room/Blog

This week on MAKING WAVES, we’re taking a closer look at our community partner, Undocufund Monterey Bay, a collaborative effort to assist Monterey Bay area undocumented immigrant workers impacted by COVID-19. Next week from August 10 – 16, we’re partnering with Currents Artist, Whitney Aguiñiga in a virtual auction of the works in her exhibition to raise funds for MMA and Undocufund Monterey Bay.

UndocuFund Monterey Bay is a collaborative effort to assist Monterey Bay area undocumented immigrant workers impacted by COVID-19.  The fund helps individuals and families with a one-time emergency assistance in this time of crisis. Undocumented workers are over-represented in the services, hospitality, and agriculture industries: industries severely impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. This has led to the loss of their homes, wages, and/or employment in addition to staggeringly disparate numbers of COVID-19 cases in comparison with other communities in Monterey County.  At the same time, undocumented workers have been excluded from federally and state funded safety net programs.  This comes at a time when immigrant communities were already threatened by anti-immigration policies.

The Monterey Museum of Art is committed to inclusion, diversity, equity, and accessibility and is continually looking for creative ways to reach all those in Monterey County. The COVID-19 pandemic has thrown into even sharper light the economic discrepancies in Monterey County, particularly among the undocumented population. Undocumented workers are over-represented in the services, hospitality, and agriculture industries: industries severely impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic and well represented and relied upon in the Monterey Bay community. It is our hope through this partnership to raise much needed funds and awareness for those often left in the margins.  Art is an equalizer and a beacon of hope for many in crisis and by combining hope with financial relief, we hope to ease the strain on those who provide critical services to our community.
