About MMA

: Director’s Welcome

Monterey County is a beacon for visitors; a place world-renowned for its spectacular scenery and agricultural bounty. Our visual arts tradition is equally rich and generations of painters and photographers have journeyed here to be inspired by the landscape or simply enjoy the solace that permits their creative batteries to recharge. The Monterey Museum of Art is the unique steward of that continuously evolving legacy. Works of art by the Monterey Peninsula Art Colony—artists who began flocking here in the late 19th century—are the heart and soul of the Museum’s permanent collection. I invite you to visit our Pacific Street location where you can savor these magnificent paintings and photographs and learn of Central California’s fascinating contributions to the history of American art. I further invite you to explore our unique La Mirada location with its lush gardens, historic charm and modern galleries designed by noted architect Charles Moore. Here you’ll enjoy exhibitions of Asian art and contemporary art organized from the Museum’s rich permanent collection and traveling exhibitions on loan from other museums.Joining the Museum gives you access to a wide range of programs and activities. Our membership groups, the Collector’s Guild, the Docent Council , the Friends of the Museum and the Monterey Contemporaries, are a wonderful introduction to the Museum and a great way to meet some of Monterey County’s most creative people. I encourage you to subscribe to our weekly email newsletter.

Thank you for visiting the Monterey Museum of Art website. I hope you’ll come back often and I look forward to seeing you at the Museum.

With best wishes,
